The New Website Builder :

The Six Commandments of Web 2.0 E-Commerce

(thanks to our good friends over at http://www.ecommerce20.net/6principles.html for this list)

  1. The More People See You, The More You’ll Sell

Sounds like common sense, right? Well, eCommerce 2.0 has completely changed the approach most web-based businesses have taken when it comes to exposing your business to new customers. In the olden days, you employed direct sales, a call center, your own personal website and maybe a single partner. Today, you can use a multitude of online channels like shopping comparison engines like Bizrate, huge online marketplaces like Shopping.Yahoo.com and additional branded websites. The sky is truly the limit these days when it comes to how and where you can market your new eBusiness.

  1. Make it Fun and make it Easy.

Sites like Amazon have really led the way with revolutionizing the ease and fun of online shopping. With the adaptation of one-click shopping that cuts out having to type in your address, shipping address and payment information with every transaction, customers are more prone to shop at your site early and often. Try to design your site with white space in mind. The less clutter, the clearer the photographs of your inventory and the easier it is to complete a transaction are all directly linked to the long term success of your eBusiness.

  1. Don’t be afraid to go after niche markets

The old wisdom when it came to eBusiness and business in general was that you had to appeal to the widest audience possible to stay around for the long haul. But with the incredible amount of direct niche target advertising on the net, you really can make a name for yourself going after the smaller group instead of the larger one. If you feel you provide a service or a product that fits a niche perfectly, exploit it. On the Internet, you can’t be everything to everyone (not even Amazon can), so market to those that your site appeals to most.

  1. Integration is the key to the future

eCommerce 2.0 and the entire Web 2.0 movement is founded on the integration and combination of systems, styles and technology. No website is an island, and any site that tries to be is going to go the way of the Dodo. Learn to be flexible and welcome new ways for customers to use and experience your web portal.

  1. Build a Community not just a Business

Let’s face it, every eBusiness out there would love to have a community of obsessed fans spreading the gospel of your site all over cyberspace. Today, not only is this community atmosphere commonplace, it is expected. If your site doesn’t have a message board or an attached blog where you can get direct and instant feedback from your customer base, build one. Nothing can cause a frenzy of purchases, loyalty and fun like a dedicated, well-run community atmosphere with a message board or blog.

  1. Don’t Fear the Data

Working hand in hand with commandment number one is the feedback you’ll receive from all of your online partners, as well as your very own site. It can be a bit overwhelming at first to mine through all of that raw data, but the long term sucsess of your business is likely buried in that very data. Compile, analyze and learn from where your business is falling short and where you’re exceeding expectations. The more you know about how people are visiting, manipulating and ordering from your site, the better you’ll be able to serve their needs.
