Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays to all of you! We at the Chamber of E-Commerce (www.chamberecommerce.com) hope to find you in good health and full of holiday cheer. As the weather gets colder and the nights longer we hope while you’re staying indoors that you’ll devote some time to setting up or maintaining your Chamber of E-Commerce web-page to help bring in some holiday cash.  Keep in mind that, according to MediaPost research, the majority of money given as gifts during the holidays doesn’t get spent until January and February, so you still have plenty of time to take advantage of our new offers and features to help earn money yourself.

What's New This Month

This is an exciting time to be a member of the Chamber of E-Commerce as we’re adding new tools and functionality to our website—and yours—as well adding new features to our easy to use website builder. Here’s what’s fresh and hot:

We added support for YouTube videos! Starting this month, you will be able to easily insert any video from YouTube.com into your pages to show off product videos. From walkthroughs of property for real-estate sales to showing off the craftsmanship of your hand-made jewelry, the power of video makes it vastly easier to drive home a sale. If you don’t have video of your product up on your website, you’re missing a bet, especially because it’s easy to get all of the tools you need to make quality video presentations for under a hundred dollars.

We now also support Google AdSense™! Earn more revenue from your website, while providing visitors with a more rewarding online experience. Google AdSense™ automatically delivers text and image ads that are precisely targeted to your site and your site content—ads so well-matched, in fact, that your readers will actually find them useful. And when you add Google WebSearch to your site, AdSense delivers targeted ads to your search results pages too. With AdSense you earn more ad revenue with minimal effort—and no additional cost.

Building a Better Website Part I

Meta Tags – While Search Engine Optimization is an entire specialized field of marketing, you can help search engines find and rank you by adding relevant META tags to your site. What are META tags? They are data that tells search engines what exactly your site is about. Unless you’ve paid to have the Chamber of E-Commerce design your site for you, you’ll need to roll up your sleeves, though, and go to www.chamberecommerce.com and log in to your account.
If you already have a site, click “Edit Site” after you’ve logged in and then select the “Site Design” button on the left of the screen.
Modify your keywords and description to match your online business. Bear in mind that specific keywords are more useful than general ones. “Business” is not a good META tag, but “Custom Neon Sign Creation” is. Getting this right will help search engines know to return your site when your keywords are searched for.
If you don’t have a website with the Chamber of E-Commerce yet, now is a great time to get signed up! Just make sure that you click the “Keywords” and “Description” boxes and enter your keywords when you use the site template to build your site.
Don’t worry, you can change your meta tags at any time, although it may take the search engines a few weeks to catch up.

Get the Word Out – How else can you increase your site’s search engine rankings? Search the web for blogs or forums that are related to your business and make a habit of joining the discussions there. Put a link to your site in posts occasionally, or in your signature if you are allowed, and make sure that your posts are well-written and contain a worthwhile comment. A comment on a blog like, “Great site! Visit my business at www.someplace.biz” will almost certainly be deleted by the blog moderator. A good comment with a link to your site will likely stay on the forums and help you generate traffic.

Pound the Pavement – This is a method that is best used when your business is just starting out: print up business cards, make flyers, put ads in the paper and get out and meet people. If you can drive local customers to your site and they like your product, they’ll tell their friends on the internet and you will begin to generate “buzz”.

Stay tuned next month for more ideas to build a better website!
